SALT Senior Manager, Unclaimed Property

Job SummaryThe Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Unclaimed Property is responsible for advising clients of the tax implications and other accounting related matters that affect their business objectives, with an emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting.
This is a unique role that will allow a chosen professional the ability to use their tax and/or accounting skills (e.
g.
, project management, reconciliation skills, financial auditing skills, accounting skills, problem solving skills, internal controls, process/system enhancements, etc.
) in a consultative capacity where sporadic data sets are obtained analyzed and modeled.
The Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Unclaimed Property will recommend alternate courses of action, as well as identify different methods of complying with unclaimed property statutes and regulations.
In this role, the person will be charged with project management, presentations to clients and states, coordinating compliance, audit defense, VDAs, and other consulting engagements, managing client expectations and deliverables, marketing, networking and business development and recognizing potential changes in unclaimed property policy and applying new policies to compliance and consulting engagements.
In addition, the Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Unclaimed Property will work with the Core Tax and Audit Principals, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to their clients.
Job DutiesResearchIdentifies complex situations when research is necessary providing an outline of the issue(s) and the appropriate source of research to be conductedAnalyzes researched facts and the sources utilized prior to composing a detailed report of the research findingsDevelops relationships with in-state and out of state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel, Department of Treasury, etc.
Routinely keeps abreast of latest relevant unclaimed property statutory, regulatory and case law changes Unclaimed Property ComplianceObtains and manipulates data from client to use in preparation of annual escheat returnsUses FSI Track, BDO Global Portal and other systems for data gatheringImports data into FSI Track and prepares returnsIdentifies appropriate B2B and other exemptions/deferralsPerforms reconciliations on data gathered to data reportedComposes responses to notices from state authoritiesAssists with due diligence letter processingAssists with client payment processingProvides assistance with exam supportCommunicates routinely with clients and UP team membersUnclaimed Property ConsultingDrafts memorandums, opinions and other documentation on various escheat issuesDetermines escheat planning process Develops policy and procedures, address internal controls Represents clients on unclaimed property audits, mitigating exposures and assisting with best practicesRepresents clients on voluntary disclosures mitigating exposures and assisting with best practicesAssists with identifying gift card planning opportunities and implementationConducts client interviews, onsite visits, workplans, etc.
Reviews general ledger detail, banking records, and other relevant source data for escheat itemsPrepares and reviews scheduling decks of sporadic data into UP templates for analysisAssists clients with remediation procedures (e.
g.
showing transactions are not owed)Develops exposure quantification models to calculate escheat exposuresAssists with client refund review processApplies all applicable state tax consulting sub-specialties and confers with other STS professionals when appropriateEnsures escheat engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work commencing and manages engagementsAssists in the development of consultative selling strategiesResponsible for achieving/assisting with securing a $500k - $750k

Supervises the day-to-day workload of SALT Managers, Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and reviews work product Ensures SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant softwareEvaluates the performance of SALT Managers, Senior Associates and Associates and assists in the development of goals and objectives to enhance professional developmentDelivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates and InternsActs as Career Advisor to SALT Managers, Senior Associates and Associates, as appropriateQualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education:
Bachelor's degree, required; focus in Accounting, preferred
Experience:
Six (6) or more years of prior experience in tax, financial statement auditing, internal auditing or forensic accounting in a public accounting firm or in-house organization, requiredPrior supervisory experience, required License/Certifications:
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.
S.
jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), preferred Software:
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, requiredExperience with Power BI, Alteryx, and other software, preferredLanguage:
