The American Heart Association s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

The American Heart Association has an opportunity for a Grant and Proposal Writing Intern in our Mission Advancement department.
Mission Advancement is responsible for raising individual major gifts ($100,000 or more), foundation and government grants, and estate gifts from donors who wish to make an impact and leave a lasting legacy.
The majority of our major gift requests are presented in writing, through a proposal or application process, or at the donor s invitation.
In this role, you will gain on-the-job experience learning how to identify new prospects, how to develop a fundraising proposal strategy, as well as best practices in writing and customizing compelling proposals to raise funds for the prioritized initiatives of the AHA.

The Grant and Proposal Writing Intern will work under the supervision of an experienced fundraising professional and support the needs of the Mission Advancement team in a variety of ways, as described below.

  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Conduct external research on prospective foundation donors, using specific database tools and basic internet research, identifying priorities, application due dates, and application requirements.
  • Reach out to assigned foundations to inquire about opportunities, gain additional information about the requirements and deadlines for proposals, and identify next steps, documenting the information in the CRM (Customer Relationship Management database, Salesforce) and sharing it with the fundraising team.
  • Attend planning meetings with seasoned fundraisers to develop strategy and cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for donors and prospects.
  • Use resources and templates to write applications and customize proposals, ensuring that each is well-written, compelling, consistent with the strategic direction and funding needs of the AHA, and respond to donor goals.
  • Document donor plans and activity in Salesforce CRM (Customer Relationship Management) database, leveraging dashboards and reports, and providing regular progress reporting as requested.
  • Work as requested on special assignments as requested.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and data privacy regulations when conducting research and handling donor information.

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are college juniors, seniors, or graduate students.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Research skills - An ability to do deep dives in individuals, companies, and foundations.
  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.
  • A highly motivated self-starter who creates opportunity does not wait for direction, is highly organized, and operates with limited management the Intern must be resourceful.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Required Equipment:
    Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:
    30am-5pm CST.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.
    For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
