As an Equal Opportunity Investigator, you will play a pivotal role in carrying out the mission of the EEOC. The work involves planning and conducting investigations of charges/complaints of employment discrimination under Federal laws that EEOC enforces. As an Equal Opportunity Investigator (trainee), you will join highly motivated and diverse team members dedicated to the Commission's mission of eradicating employment discrimination. You will work with more experienced investigators and receive classroom and on-the-job training. Typical work assignments include:
Interviewing members of the public who contact EEOC because they believe they have been discriminated against in the workplace. Providing assistance to them in understanding the laws enforced and their rights in filing a charge of discrimination. Helping them to file a charge of employment discrimination under federal statutes enforced by the Commission and maintaining contact with them during the course of processing their charge. Drafting written investigative plans identifying bases and issues involved in the charge, the applicable theories of law, and the scope of the investigation. Obtaining documentary and testimonial evidence such as applications and payroll documents that are relevant to issues under investigation. Conducting on-site investigations of employers' facilities, including reviewing their records and interviewing individuals Interviewing witnesses and creating a record of their statements. Investigating simple cases to determine if employment discrimination has occurred. These would involve cases with limited issues and which fall under well-established legal precedents. Drafting written reports of investigative findings citing specific testimonial and/or documentary evidence, applicable case law, policies and precedents relied upon in support of finding. Participating in settlement negotiations. Responding to routine correspondence and inquiries; and Effectively managing a case load. You can qualify for this position if you have:
A bachelor's degree with either a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) based on a 4.0 scale; a 3.5 GPA (4.0 scale) for required courses completed in your major field of study during your junior and senior years at a 4-year college or university; class standing of upper third of your graduating class in the college or university, or a major subdivision of the college or university; or membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies. OR One full year of graduate level education in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university. The education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work; OR One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 (or equivalent) grade level working in areas requiring that you determine facts, analyze issues, and interview witnesses, such as investigating employment discrimination or other kinds of charges/complaints, labor relations, human resources or law enforcement. Ability to elicit and analyze information obtained through interviews and examining records. Ability to plan, organize and manage work assignments. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translate directly to paid employment. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
